Energy Efficiency:
We prioritize energy-efficient solutions to minimize the environmental impact and reduce long-term operating costs. LED lighting, in particular, offers both energy savings and a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting options.
Halogen Lighting
Halogen bulbs gradually replaced incandescent bulbs as the standard type of pool lighting. They lasted longer, and used up to 20 percent less energy, so they were more environmentally friendly. They also cut down the time required for pool maintenance, as they needed replacing less often.
However, halogen bulbs cost almost twice as much as incandescent bulbs, so they were a more expensive option, in spite of the savings made on household bills due to reduced energy use. They also required fairly regular replacement, and as they still used filaments, they gave the same green cast to the water as incandescent bulbs. These factors meant that halogen was still not the ideal choice for swimming pool lighting.
LED Lighting
LED technology has revolutionised swimming pool lighting. Cost-effective, clean, and long-lasting, LED lighting can produce the same amount of light as a 100-watt halogen bulb while using only six watts of power. This is because LED lighting is highly energy efficient, as it converts all of the energy it uses into light rather than some of it being converted into heat, so nothing is wasted.
Because of this, LED lighting is kind to the environment and cheap to run, as it uses only a fraction of the electricity required by halogen bulbs. LED lamps also last much longer, so your pool will require far less maintenance. This leaves you free to spend more time enjoying the water.
For these reasons, LED lighting has now become the standard type of lighting used for new swimming pools in Australia.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about Pool Lights
How do I register my property’s pool?
Pools in Queensland must be registered on the Queensland Government’s pool safety register. The pool safety register is just one part of a range of initiatives that will help protect young people from drowning unnecessarily.
The new pool safety laws were introduced in 2009 and aim to reduce the incidences of drowning and serious immersion injuries of young children in swimming pools. The laws affect new and existing pools.
You can register your property’s pool online! For more information go to QLD Government Dept of Housing and Public Work Website.
Do you need an electrician to change a pool light?
If you've been wondering if you can install pool lighting yourself, the answer is no. Unless you are a licensed electrician, then you should always hire a professional for any type of repairs, installations or inspections.
Is it safe to light my pool?
Using pool lights provides a myriad of benefits, including being able to use the pool at night, and with LED lights, you'll be able to change the colour at the press of a switch. However, some customers are unsure as to whether or not pool lights are safe - luckily, Gold Coast Better Electrical can help.
Pool lights, when installed correctly, are incredibly safe. In fact, modern, low voltage lights are considered virtually risk free. However, it is critical that your lights are installed according to manufacturer standards during your pool's construction, to ensure the grounds and fail-safes are configured correctly. If the installation is not appropriately completed, the lighting system may continue to function, but it can allow electricity from unrelated electrical failures to enter the pool, causing harm to any occupants. This risk is mitigated, however, when you employ a licensed electrician to ensure your pool lights are installed correctly. In fact, using pool lighting can help you monitor your children when they go swimming at night, ensuring your family is kept safe. When your pool lights are correctly installed, they provide a range of benefits to the safety and practicality of your swimming pool.
By using pool lights, you'll be able to safely use your pool at night, while adding a lovely splash of colour. If you'd like the professionals at Gold Coast Better Electrical to review your installation and ensure it is safe for you and your family, contact us on 0430 053 383.
